Forty Years of Quayside: A Story of Leather, Craft and the Sea
Share
In 1984, when shoulder pads were in fashion and the Solent was as busy as ever, Quayside made its first pair of boat shoes. Forty years on, the world has changed considerably. Quayside hasn't — not in the ways that matter.
Where It All Began
Since those early days, thousands of pairs of Quayside boat shoes — or deck shoes, depending on where you're from — have left the workshop and found their way onto pontoons, riverbanks, harbour walls and coastal paths across Britain and beyond. Each one made by hand. Each one made from real, premium leather. Each one made with care.
That's not a marketing line. It's simply how Quayside has always worked.
Always Leather
From the very first pair in 1984 to the pair being made today, every Quayside shoe starts with leather. Not synthetic. Not a substitute. Real leather, chosen for its quality, its durability, and its ability to age beautifully. Leather that gets better with wear — softening to the shape of your foot, weathering with character, telling the story of wherever you've taken it.
There are easier materials to work with. There are cheaper ones too. Quayside has never been interested in either.
Always Handmade
Every pair of Quayside boat shoes is shaped by hand, by craftsmen and craftswomen who know their trade. The rubber soles are individually stitched and secured — not glued, not pressed by machine, but stitched — for a bond that lasts. It takes longer. It costs more. And it shows.
This is shoemaking as it was meant to be done: skilled, considered, and unhurried.
Always Made with Care
Forty years is a long time to keep doing something the same way. But when the way you do it produces a shoe that grips confidently on a wet deck, dries naturally after a soaking, and outlasts almost anything else you'll put on your feet — there's very little reason to change.
Every pair that leaves Quayside carries that same commitment. Not because it's tradition for tradition's sake, but because it works.
Here for the Next Forty
Quayside began in 1984 with a simple idea: make a great boat shoe, make it properly, and make it to last. That idea hasn't changed. And as long as there are rivers to explore, regattas to attend, and harbours to wander, it won't.
